As a first-generation low-income college student, traveling to other countries was not a realistic option because of the financial burden it would impose on my family and I. However, I was reluctant to let that stop me from pursuing this ambition of mine when I heard of the various scholarships and aid that was available through my home institution’s study abroad center. I remember the advisors informing me of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, and how likely the odds were. Apparently the scholarship is awarded to one of every three applicants, and the average award is $4,000. Eventually, after two short essays and a short application, I was awarded the scholarship. To this day, it has played a major role in my study abroad experience. Because of it, I don’t need to heavily worry about being frugal or eating ramen every night. I have extra money to fund my personal endeavors, and for that I am deeply grateful. All in all, the Gilman Scholarship Program is a great option for students like me who need financial assistance for their study abroad trip.
In addition to the scholarship, I also received financial aid and worked during the summer to make ends meet. With this backing me, I should get out of study abroad debt-free, but it is all thanks to an amazing scholarship and my home institution for not only educating me on the funds that were accessible, but encouraging me not to let monetary issues be a barrier to chasing my dreams.
